"Original Sin: A Short Story" by Robert Penn Warren made me feel as if the character had a ghost "on his/her back" or following them for some reason. I thought that maybe the ghost was his/her grandfather. After reading the story i got the impression that his/her grandfather passed away and since they were so close the grandfather was watching over him mainly at night time.
After reading it as a group i got a better understanding as to what the author was putting out. Warren doesn't give the character a gender so lets just say it was a guy. "When children call and your heart goes stone in the bosom," what he meant by this quote was that the sound of children laughing annoyed/ angered him a lot. With that being said he could have bad experiences as a child and it still bothers him. I felt that there could be a possibility that he had a mental illness or was just plain sick. "...And hear of the deaths of friends with a shy pleasure." That's weird for someone to be happy that their friend has passed away. From the symbols given in the story, his personality was formed from his terrible childhood to make him so grumpy and cold hearted. The ghost that was following him was his grandfather and he probably wanted better for him.
